Pictured (clockwise from left): Antoinette Cary Shipley (BS, 1893), son Frederick C. Shipley, husband Frederick W. Shipley (PhD, 1901), son Walter Shipley. Antoinette Cary Shipley (1871-1946) was the first person to receive a BS from the University of Chicago. Born in Elyria, Ohio as the youngest of nine, she had transferred to the school in 1892 from Wellesley and received the only BS degree awarded at the inaugural graduation ceremony on June 26, 1893. She went on to work for Marion Talbot, Dean of Women at the University - who had also come from Wellesley. Antoinette was later active in the women's suffrage movement. She raised two sons in Clayton, MO and died in 1946.
